Industry sources confirm Netflix on demand service about to launch

According to a news article at Mercury News "Well-placed industry sources confirmed Friday that the Los Gatos company is close to launching an on-demand rental service that is paired with a Netflix-provided television set-top box."

This confirms our report on the glitch in Netflix that exposed parts of the upcoming service. The Netflix Player glitch was first reported on hackingnetflix two weeks ago.

The new service doesn't seem like it will be grand in nature, and will probable not give customers access to the latest movie releases. This is hinted at by Netflix spokesman Ken Ross, "We have said we're committed to testing a product this year and we expect the test to be of a very modest nature''. At any rate, whatever service Netflix launches, will give it the launch pad it needs to experiment and fine turn their system for the day when the major movie studios provide someday access to video on demand ( VOD ) versions of their latest releases as soon as the DVD versions are available.

Sharp Raising LCD Production.

Sharp Corp, has announced it will be increasing production at its LCD panel factories to meet increasing demand. The company plans to raise production from 4.32 million units to 4.8 million units a year. This is in anticipation of the companies’ expectation of an 80 percent year-on-year surge in global demand for LCD TVs. This move will give Sharp the ability to supply approximately 32 percent of the world's demand for LCD panels.

Sharp plans to boost production at its existing factories, such as the one at Kameyama, by increasing efficiency. However it also plans to build a lager factory near Kameyama, this new facility will be able to handle larger sized pieces of glass. This should also serve to enhance its LCD production efficiency.

Exciting New FS-4000 Flat Panel Speaker Line from Atlantic Technology

FS-4000 flat screen speaker systemAtlantic Technology has announced the introduction of the FS-4000 flat screen speaker system, which combines three separate speakers into a single low profile housing for use with modern flat panel displays. Using the same drivers and technology developed for the company's FS-3200 LR and Center channel speakers, this system provides the performance of a complete front soundstage in a single cabinet that features numerous innovative options for mounting on-wall, or on a rocker base above or below the display.

"The FS-4000 allows consumers to have the three-speaker front soundstage that great home theater demands, without the mess, clutter, and setup concerns that come from having three individual cabinets," comments Atlantic Technology President Peter Tribeman.

The FS-4000 housing is a mere 5-inches deep, and is separated internally into three individual chambers, each with a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, 4-1/2-inch woofer, and a 4-1/2-inch Bass Pressure Driver. Each section of the housing is a complete speaker unto itself, with separate speaker terminals, and a pair of rear panel controls developed for the company's high-end C.O.R.E. technology speaker systems. These allow the speakers to be sonically tailored for a wide variety of room acoustics, listener preferences, and mounting configurations.

The cabinet of the Atlantic Technology FS-4000 is composed of acoustically inert, heavily braced MDF, and the speakers are magnetically shielded so they may be placed close to any type of video monitor without degrading video performance.
Consistent with Atlantic's renowned attention to detail, each tweeter is raised above the woofer centerline to minimize the off-axis response nonlinearities that plague most conventional horizontally-oriented speakers.

The FS-4000's bass response extends to 75 Hz, providing full-bodied musical sound even when used without a subwoofer. The speaker can also be combined with any of Atlantic's highly regarded subwoofers and surround speakers to create a stunning and immersive home theater system.

The FS-4000 can be mounted directly to the wall with keyhole mounts, and also includes a choice of either a straight bracket for mounting perpendicular to the wall, or angle bracket that aims the speaker slightly up (when mounted below the display), or down (when mounted above the display). In addition, it also comes with a stud bracket that anchors the speaker securely to wall studs for a rock-solid installation. Lastly, it also includes Atlantic Technology's exclusive rocker base, which allows the speaker to be mounted on a shelf or on the video display itself, and tilted toward the listening area at any angle desired.

The FS-4000 loudspeaker system is available in Metallic Silver or Gloss Black finishes, with a matching perforated metal grille. The grille is held in place with neodymium magnets, the same arrangement as found on Atlantic’s $20,000 flagship System 8200.

The Atlantic Technology Model FS-4000 is now available at a suggested retail price of $999 each.

From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems, state-of-the-art home theater electronics components, and products for custom audio/video installation. Netflix appoints Peggy Fry as vice president of advertising sales

Netflix, Inc., the world's largest online movie rental service, announced the appointment of Peggy Fry as vice president of advertising sales, a new position created to provide relevant advertisers with opportunities to gain exposure to the company's more than three million subscribers.

Netflix said it will offer advertisers a range of options, from placements in emails to its members to presence on its trademark red mailers and positioning on its Web site (www.netflix.com).

Ms. Fry brings deep sales, Internet and entertainment industry experience to the new post. From 1997 to 2003, she held a series of increasingly senior sales positions at America Online, including vice president of interactive marketing for the AOL Entertainment Group. In this role, she was responsible for all of AOL's movie studio sales, covering both filmed and home entertainment.

Since 2003, Ms. Fry has served as president of Smashing Entertainment, a film production and co-financing company she helped create to produce films for television and theatrical distribution. The company's productions have appeared at the Sundance Film Festival and on Showtime, as well as direct-to-DVD. Earlier in her career, Ms. Fry held sales positions at several large print publishing concerns, including Hearst Publishing, Family Media and Lang Communications.

At Netflix, Ms. Fry will be based at the company's Beverly Hills office.

"Netflix's large and growing subscriber base offers a strong advertising platform, particularly for entertainment and other consumer-oriented marketers," said Ms. Fry. "We'll work with advertisers to deliver messages that are both relevant and interesting and add value to the Netflix customer experience."

Possible Netflix download service for TiVo

There's a post at Hacking Netflix's web site that seems to indicate that a possible new Netflix download service for TiVo, or other PVRs, is about to be launched. Someone has noticed a section on the account info page for "Netflix Player" that links to "Register Player".

This could be a sign of the results of the Netflix and TiVo partnership announcement from September of last year, when they said they would "... jointly develop a product to download movies over the Internet that could mark a revolution in home entertainment". The following is another quote from the story when it broke last year.

TiVo Chief Executive Mike Ramsay said that Netflix would arrange movie licensing from Hollywood studios and TiVo would focus on the product technology. He said the product would not be available this year, but provided no details on an expected launch date.

I see engadget is also talking about this.
