With integrated hard-drive and music service browsing, consumers will see all tracks related to their searches, including those from the massive URGE catalog but not stored on their PC. In addition, with drag-and-drop playlist creation, consumers can simply move individual songs or entire stacks of albums into the URGE playlist pane for syncing to a device or burning to a CD. More than 100 portable devices and home network media devices compatible with Windows Media, including the Xbox 360™ video game system, will work with URGE.

Sony BMG Starts Compact Disc Recall/Exchange Program For XCP Content Protected CDs

SONY BMG Music Entertainment today announced the commencement of a mail-in recall program through which consumers can exchange compact discs CDs containing XCP content protection software for a replacement version of the same CD without the XCP software, in addition to receiving MP3 files of that CD

Overview of Actions to Date on XCP Software

SONY BMG Music Entertainment today announced the commencement of a mail-in program through which consumers can exchange compact discs (CDs) containing XCP content protection software for a replacement version of the same CD without the XCP software, in addition to receiving MP3 files of that CD.

XCP content protection software is included on 52 SONY BMG titles. Further information about the exchange program, including an FAQ for consumers about XCP technology and a list of titles may be found at the website dedicated to providing consumers with information on this subject, http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp.

Consumers can also download a software update from SONY BMG's website at http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp. This update addresses the security vulnerabilities associated with XCP software.

In addition to consulting the list of titles at the website, consumers can identify titles with XCP content protection by checking the back of the CD packaging. If there is a black and white table with the words "Compatible With", and if the URL in that table ends with the letters "XCP" (http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp), that indicates the disc contains the XCP software.

Information on the CD Exchange Program
Consumers who wish to exchange their XCP content protected CDs or also receive MP3 files of the titles in addition to their replacement CDs should visit http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp for a list of titles and versions, specific instructions and shipping information. There will be no charge to consumers for shipping in either direction.

In addition to providing replacement CDs by mail, SONY BMG is making available MP3 files to consumers who are exchanging their XCP content protected CDs. Consumers who choose to receive MP3 files will receive an e-mail with a link to the MP3 downloads upon SONY BMG's receipt and verification of their XCP CDs.

SONY BMG's Actions to Date Regarding XCP Software
SONY BMG has taken the following actions with respect to XCP software:

1. SONY BMG has ceased manufacturing compact discs with XCP software.

2. SONY BMG is working with its retail partners to withdraw compact discs with XCP software from distribution and retail chains. It has asked retailers to cease sale of those discs and to return them to SONY BMG. This withdrawal program has been and is being widely communicated.

3. SONY BMG is moving as quickly as the manufacturing process will allow to replace all compact discs with XCP that are present in the chain of distribution with non-copy protected discs.

4. As announced today, SONY BMG has commenced an exchange program whereby any consumer who has purchased an XCP-protected compact disc will be able to receive a replacement, non-copy protected disc and MP3 files of the titles.

5. Consumers can download a software update from the SONY BMG's website at http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html. The effect of this update is to "uncloak" the XCP components on the user's hard drive, thereby allowing anti-virus software to detect it and block any viruses from exploiting it.

6. SONY BMG is will soon make available a revised and secure procedure for consumers to uninstall the XCP software from their computers. The removal of XCP (and the downloading of the software update) does not affect the consumer's ability to play and use any music from an XCP-protected compact disc already transferred from the disc to the computer.

7. In addition, Microsoft and the major anti-virus companies have been made aware of the security issues that have been raised. The anti-virus companies have issued updates to their customers to address potential vulnerabilities arising from the installation of XCP software.

SONY BMG's Commitment to User Privacy and Software Security
SONY BMG is committed to testing, verifying and disclosing to consumers, its use of any copy protection technology.

SONY BMG is reviewing all aspects of its content protection initiatives to be sure that they are secure and user-friendly for consumers. As the company develops new initiatives, it will continue to seek new ways to meet consumers' demands for flexibility in how they listen to music, while protecting intellectual property rights.

Background Regarding XCP Software
Security concerns have been raised regarding the use of CDs containing XCP software in computers. These issues have no effect on the use of these discs in conventional, non-computer-based CD and/or DVD players. This content protection technology was provided by a third-party vendor, First4Internet, and was designed to prevent unlimited copying and unauthorized redistribution of the music on the disc.

SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT is a global recorded music joint venture with a roster of current artists that includes a broad array of both local artists and international superstars, as well as a vast catalog that comprises some of the most important recordings in history. SONY BMG is 50% owned by Bertelsmann A.G. and 50% owned by SONY Corporation of America.

SONY BMG statement about XCP content protection and CD recall

SONY BMG statement about XCP content protection and CD recall

November 16, 2005

To Our Valued Customers:

You may be aware of the recent attention given to the XCP content protection software included on some SONY BMG CDs.  This software was provided to us by a third-party vendor, First4Internet.  Discussion has centered on security concerns raised about the use of CDs containing this software.

We share the concerns of consumers regarding these discs, and we are instituting a program that will allow consumers to exchange any CD with XCP software for the same CD without copy protection.  We also have asked our retail partners to remove all unsold CDs with XCP software from their store shelves and inventory.  We will make further details of this program available shortly.

We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause our customers and we are committed to making this situation right.  It is important to note that the issues regarding these discs exist only when they are played on computers, not on conventional, non-computer-based CD and/or DVD players.

Our new initiatives follow the measures we have already taken, including last weeks voluntary suspension of the manufacture of CDs with the XCP software.  In addition, to address security concerns, we provided to major software and anti-virus companies a software update, which also may be downloaded at http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html.  We will shortly provide a simplified and secure procedure to uninstall the XCP software if it resides on your computer.

Ultimately, the experience of consumers is our primary concern, and our goal is to help bring our artists music to as broad an audience as possible.  Going forward, we will continue to identify new ways to meet demands for flexibility in how you and other consumers listen to music.

Apple's TV deals for the new ipod and what the future may hold

With the launch of apple's new video plaing ipod came the release of itunes 6, and the ability to download music videos, tv shows, and movie shorts.

According to apple, there are currently 2000 music videos availabe for purchase on itunes. Each video costs $1.99 to download. When compared to the price and length of tv episodes (which also sell for $1.99 an episode), this price seems bit steep. But maybe another way to look at it is that you are getting a 99 cent song and the $1 extra is for the video.

The current collection of TV shows all come from ABC and include the following shows:

Desprate housewives Currently has 3 episodes from Desprate housewives Season 2. You can download all of Desprate housewives season 1, with 23 episodes for $34.99

lost for apples ipod video Currently has 3 Lost episodes from Season 2. You can download all of Lost season 1, with 25 episodes for $34.99

night stalker for apples ipod video 2 episodes from the current season of Night Stalker are available.

thats so raven for apples ipod video Offers a partial set of season 3's episodes. There are currently 14 that's so raven shows available for download.

the suite life for apples ipod video 15 Episodes of The suite life are available for download

Apple to give TiVo some competition?
From what they've been able to do with the music aspect of iTunes, it's very easy to see how Apple could be seen as a competitor to TiVo, especially with its TiVoToGo service.

"We think this is a real breakthrough,...It's never before been done, where you can buy hit prime-time TV shows the day after they're broadcast." Steve Jobs

I couldn't agree more with Jobs. As more tv networks get on board, the selection of tv shows available for download will increase to a point where you should be able to find most of the hot shows you want on itunes. Of course this will only be work for a certain type of tv viewer. At this point in time all new shows are only downloadable the day after the show airs. The video quality and resolution also means that this content will only be viewed on the ipod. If Apple wanted to, I'm sure they could work to secure rights to make higher resolution versions available for pc viewing. Quicktime 7 already includes the ability to play HD quality video. Taking all this to the next step could be exactly what the industry needs to get people used to buying video content online, instead of downloading them for free on some P2P network.

Other Directions for video content.
Apple already has a large collection of trailiers online at http://www.apple.com/trailers/ This content is also available in itune, but right now only for viewing in itunes. The next logical step I'd see would be for apple to make these available for downloading into the new ipod. Traillers should of couse be free downloads, and will serve as a way to increase the amount of video content users can access on their new ipods. I'd assume this would help sales. Also if the movie studios have been paying apple to host their trailers, this will just serve as extra bang for the buck.

Exciting New FS-4000 Flat Panel Speaker Line from Atlantic Technology

FS-4000 flat screen speaker systemAtlantic Technology has announced the introduction of the FS-4000 flat screen speaker system, which combines three separate speakers into a single low profile housing for use with modern flat panel displays. Using the same drivers and technology developed for the company's FS-3200 LR and Center channel speakers, this system provides the performance of a complete front soundstage in a single cabinet that features numerous innovative options for mounting on-wall, or on a rocker base above or below the display.

"The FS-4000 allows consumers to have the three-speaker front soundstage that great home theater demands, without the mess, clutter, and setup concerns that come from having three individual cabinets," comments Atlantic Technology President Peter Tribeman.

The FS-4000 housing is a mere 5-inches deep, and is separated internally into three individual chambers, each with a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, 4-1/2-inch woofer, and a 4-1/2-inch Bass Pressure Driver. Each section of the housing is a complete speaker unto itself, with separate speaker terminals, and a pair of rear panel controls developed for the company's high-end C.O.R.E. technology speaker systems. These allow the speakers to be sonically tailored for a wide variety of room acoustics, listener preferences, and mounting configurations.

The cabinet of the Atlantic Technology FS-4000 is composed of acoustically inert, heavily braced MDF, and the speakers are magnetically shielded so they may be placed close to any type of video monitor without degrading video performance.
Consistent with Atlantic's renowned attention to detail, each tweeter is raised above the woofer centerline to minimize the off-axis response nonlinearities that plague most conventional horizontally-oriented speakers.

The FS-4000's bass response extends to 75 Hz, providing full-bodied musical sound even when used without a subwoofer. The speaker can also be combined with any of Atlantic's highly regarded subwoofers and surround speakers to create a stunning and immersive home theater system.

The FS-4000 can be mounted directly to the wall with keyhole mounts, and also includes a choice of either a straight bracket for mounting perpendicular to the wall, or angle bracket that aims the speaker slightly up (when mounted below the display), or down (when mounted above the display). In addition, it also comes with a stud bracket that anchors the speaker securely to wall studs for a rock-solid installation. Lastly, it also includes Atlantic Technology's exclusive rocker base, which allows the speaker to be mounted on a shelf or on the video display itself, and tilted toward the listening area at any angle desired.

The FS-4000 loudspeaker system is available in Metallic Silver or Gloss Black finishes, with a matching perforated metal grille. The grille is held in place with neodymium magnets, the same arrangement as found on Atlantics $20,000 flagship System 8200.

The Atlantic Technology Model FS-4000 is now available at a suggested retail price of $999 each.

From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems, state-of-the-art home theater electronics components, and products for custom audio/video installation. For more information on Atlantic Technology and its many fine products for home theater and custom audio/video installation, visit www.atlantictechnology.com or call 781-762-6300.

A look at Canton's Newest LE Speakers

Canton LE 190 Speaker Canton, Germany's largest and best selling manufacturer of loudspeakers, has introduced a new family of six moderately priced speakers for music and home theater. While the new LE 100 Series speakers look similar to earlier LE models, the line has been given a significant performance boost thanks to refinements to the tweeters, midrange drivers, woofers, and crossover networks, and with some subtle, but important changes to the baffle and enclosure design.

"The remarkable new LE 100 Series is classic Canton," said Paul Madsen, President of Canton USA. "Take a great product and make it even better. This process of continuous improvement allows each line to steadily improve without losing its identity or shooting off in unproductive directions."

The Canton LE 100 Series consists of six models: the LE 190 and LE 170 full-range tower speakers; LE 150 CM center channel speaker; LE 130 and LE 120 compact two-way speakers; and LE 110 on-wall speakers.

Each of the LE 100 models incorporates a newly refined version of the company's silk dome tweeter, which has a completely redesigned geometry employing a finer silk material for improved distortion characteristics and bandwidth. The tweeter mounting plate was also redesigned with a slightly flared profile that provides a smoother frequency response, greater bandwidth, and a 3 dB increase in tweeter efficiency across the operating range.

Bass and midrange drivers across the line feature sophisticated polypropylene cones, injected rubber surrounds, and redesigned motor structures. The 6- and 7-inch drivers used as woofers in the two-way systems, and as midranges in the LE 170 and 190, feature unique concave dustcaps made of the same material as the cones themselves to provide multiple resonance paths and improved dispersion characteristics. The 8-inch versions used as woofers in the LE 190 employ a more conventional dome dustcap for increased linear excursion and power handling and efficiency.

Each of the speakers' front baffles have been also been redesigned, incorporating a gentle convex curve across the face, with stylish chamfering above and below the bass and midrange drivers. These improvements not only enhance the appearance of the series, they serve to dramatically reduce deleterious edge effects. This change also adds significant mass to the baffle helping to reduce cabinet resonances.

All of the LE 100 models are currently available in the line's signature bicolor finishes: Beech cabinet with a silver lacquer front baffle, or cherry cabinet with a graphite front panel. Each model is also available in single-color black ash, or silver lacquer finishes.

The LE 190 floorstanding speaker is the largest model in the series. It features a three-way bass reflex design, employing a pair of 8-inch woofers, a single 7-inch midrange, and 1-inch fabric dome tweeter. It has a suggested retail price of $1199 per pair.

The LE 170 floorstander employs a sophisticated 2-1/2 way design that uses a pair of 7-inch cones for deep bass reproduction, but routes midrange frequencies to only the top cone to provide improved off-axis dispersion. It has a suggested retail price of $899 per pair.

The magnetically shielded LE 150 CM can be used as either a horizontal center channel, or for front or rear channels in a home theater. It features two 6-inch polypropylene woofers flanking a single tweeter, and has a suggested retail price of $449 each.

The two-way LE 130 employs a 7-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter in a front-ported cabinet suitable for mounting on a shelf, or on the optional LS 600 stand. It has a suggested retail price of $599 per pair.

The two-way LE 120 compact speaker features a 6-inch woofer and rear port, and can also be mounted on a shelf or on the LS 600 stand. It has a suggested retail price of $449 per pair.

The LE 110 loudspeaker features the same driver complement as the LE 120, but in a sealed box cabinet that is a mere 3.6-inches deep, making it ideal for on-wall mounting. It has a suggested retail price of $449 per pair.

Atlantic Technology Demonstrates Ultimate Gaming Theater

Continuous In-booth game competitions boost concept of Gaming Theaters at Atlantic Technology Booth 21744 in South Hall 1.

Atlantic Technology Demonstrates Ultimate Gaming TheaterLAS VEGAS -- Atlantic Technology, America's oldest manufacturer of dedicated home theater loudspeaker systems, has teamed up with The Cinema Design Group, a respected systems integrator based in Garland, Texas, to demonstrate the remarkable potential of a high end gaming theater at the Consumer Electronics Show opening here today.

"Just as multichannel home theater systems changed the way we enjoy movies at home, they can also dramatically improve the video game experience," said Atlantic Technology CEO, Peter Tribeman. "Modern video games are routinely encoded with multichannel audio soundtracks that put the player in the middle of the action and provide audible cues to improve game play."

Throughout the show, dealers, reps, journalists, and other attendees will be able to test their virtual courage and computer street racing skills in four-player competitions using the game Need for Speed Underground 2 by Electronic Arts. Each day's top scorer will win a pair of Atlantic's new outdoor speaker, and all contestants will be entered in a raffle to win a 5.1-channel Atlantic Technology speaker system and X-Box gaming system.

The Cinema Design Group has created a living-room-in-a-booth environment to show dealers the potential of gaming theaters, or combining home theater and gaming. It was designed around Atlantic Technologys newly introduced THX Select certified System 4200e speaker system, with the companys P2000 AV Controller and A2000 7-channel power amplifier handing amplification and processing. A Vidikron video projector, Microsoft X-Box gaming system, and four custom-designed CDG Type C gaming chairs round out the system.

From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems, state-of-the-art home theater electronics components, and products for custom audio/video installation. Atlantic's New System 4200e Now, Easier and Better

Atlantic's New System 4200e – Now, Easier and Better

Atlantic Technology System 4200e satellite speakers.Atlantic Technology has introduced its System 4200e THX Select home theater speaker ensemble, an improved version of its critically acclaimed* System 4200 THX Select system. The 4200e front-and center-channel speakers have been redesigned by replacing the original user-installed cosmetic side panels with permanently attached finishing panels. In addition, the new system's 642e subwoofer has a new, more massive 12-inch woofer and an improved cabinet.

642e SB subwoofer

642e SB subwoofer

Like its predecessor, System 4200e provides the home theater enthusiast with premium THX Select certified performance in a moderately priced product that looks and sounds like a far more expensive system. Based on Atlantic Technology's CORE (Custom Optimized, Room Enhanced) design philosophy, System 4200e has timbre characteristics that are amazingly similar to the company's more exotic, top-of-the-line (in the $25,000 range) System 8200 THX Ultra2 package.

For both dealers and consumers, the use of permanently attached side panels turns out to be much easier and more practical than using add-on panels. Since the newly redesigned front and center cabinets have slightly greater interior volume than before, there is also a nominal improvement in their bass response. Finish options remain the same: Gloss Black, Satin Black, Maple, or Silver.

642e SB 12-inch driver

642e SB 12-inch driver

The most important performance upgrade, however, is to the 642e SB subwoofer. It uses a brand new 12-inch woofer, with a three-times heavier magnet and new cone design with a lower resonant frequency. This results in an improved output over the two lowest octaves, and a significant reduction in harmonic distortion levels.

In addition to its new woofer, the 642e SB subwoofer features a powerful 300-watt internal amplifier which drives the system to produce high bass levels from 25 Hz to 300 Hz (+/- 3 dB). It also incorporates Atlantic's exclusive Clear Filter Technology™, which eliminates the deleterious effects that the subwoofer's enclosure itself can have on the sound.

The Atlantic Technology 4200e LR front speakers use two 5.25-inch GLH (Graphite Loaded Homopolymer) woofers mounted one-each above and below a single 1-inch silk dome tweeter. This vertical MTM configuration provides a wide, highly linear horizontal dispersion, while limiting vertical dispersion to reduce unwanted reflections from the floor or ceiling. The 4200e C includes the same drivers oriented horizontally, but with the woofers side-by-side and the tweeter above and between the woofers. Since the effective acoustic distance between the woofers is so small, any theoretical horizontal dispersion limitations of this configuration are essentially irrelevant. The 4200e C also features Atlantic's exclusive tilting base design, to aim the speaker directly at the listeners for optimum dialogue reproduction.

All three front speakers include controls that can adapt sound quality for different speaker placements. A three-position High Frequency Energy switch adjusts for rooms that are acoustically too bright or too dull. A Boundary Compensation toggle can be used to adjust the lower-midrange output to compensate for the sound colorations caused by placing a speaker close to a TV screen, or building it into a cabinet or shelving unit.

The 4200e SR dipole/bipole surround speakers use one woofer and tweeter system angled toward the front of the room, and another identical system angled toward the rear. A front-panel switch allows the pair to operate either out of phase in a dipole mode, or in-phase as a bipole speaker.

The Atlantic Technology System 4200e speakers will be available in January. Suggested retail prices are: 4200e LR, $930/pair; 4200e C, $550 each; 4200e SR, $900/pair; and 642e SB, $920 each. The combined price for a 5.1-channel system is $3500.00.

From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems, state-of-the-art home theater electronics components, and products for custom audio/video installation. Canton Expands Its Flagship Karat Reference Loudspeaker Series with Remarkable 3-1/2 way Center Channel Model

Karat Reference 2 DC Center is the best center channel loudspeaker the company has ever offered.

Shown with optional LS 2 stand

Canton Karat Reference 2 DC Center
Shown with optional LS 2 stand

Canton, Germany's largest and best selling loudspeaker brand, has introduced the Karat Reference 2 DC Center channel speaker, bringing the high quality and edge-of-the-envelope performance of its Karat Reference line into the realm of home theater and multi-channel music. For Canton, the Karat Reference line reflects an uncompromising commitment to quality and engineering, and a philosophy that all products can benefit from a process of continuous improvement.

Canton's Karat Reference 2 DC Center is a full-range center channel speaker that employs the same driver complement and enclosure engineering used in the company's critically lauded Karat Reference 2 DC floor-standing speaker. These driver and cabinet advances are integrated using the company's most sophisticated crossover network to date. This high level of engineering is complemented by the exceptional craftsmanship and visual design for which Canton has long been famous. The result is a loudspeaker designed to appeal the most discriminating audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts.

“This is the company's ultimate center channel speaker,” said Canton USA president, Paul Madsen. “Canton’s engineering team took the challenge of replicating the remarkable performance of the Reference 2 DC tower in a center channel speaker. The result is a speaker that will go toe to toe with nearly any loudspeaker in the world, center channel or otherwise.”

The Canton Karat Reference 2 DC Center has an unusual trapezoidal cabinet made from multiple-density laminate that is 1-1/4 inches thick that consists of a layer of high-density particleboard laminated to a layer of lower-density board. This combination is not only stronger than other speakers, but is also much more acoustically inert. The heavily braced cabinet is divided into five sonically isolated chambers, and has absolutely no parallel internal surfaces that could create standing waves. The shape also provides relatively large cabinet volume for excellent bass, while presenting a low-height front panel that minimizes diffraction and is more visually appealing than taller designs.

This loudspeaker system’s transducers, like stock car engines rebuilt for racing, are proven Canton drivers that have been reengineered with more powerful magnets, improved diaphragms, higher-tolerance gap geometry, added shielding, and better venting. The sophisticated 3-1/2-way crossover network, which uses large hand-wound coils and expensive ICW capacitors, is mechanically and acoustically isolated from the rest of the speaker in order to prevent microphonic distortions. The crossover also incorporates the latest evolution of Canton’s exclusive Displacement Control (DC) technology for higher bass levels and remarkably low levels of bass distortion.

One of the greatest challenges in developing the Karat Reference 2 Center was the adaptation of the mid/tweeter arrangement to a horizontal configuration. Conventional horizontal MTM designs suffer from dispersion irregularities caused by adverse cancellations between the drivers in the midrange frequencies. In order to negate these interactions, Canton engineers adapted the crossover network to a 3-1/2 way design, with one of the two midrange drivers reproducing the upper bass range from 150 Hz to 450 Hz while the other goes from 150 Hz to 3,200 Hz. The horizontal dispersion is improved because the shorter wavelengths are now only produced by a single driver. There is also some improvement in upper bass output.

One of the key design goals for the Karat Reference 2 DC Center was to maintain the exceptional bass performance that the Reference series is known for, both in terms of high output levels and extended low frequency range and accuracy. This is accomplished through optimal integration of the acoustic suspension enclosure with the woofer and crossover, plus the careful application of Canton’s proven Displacement Control high-pass filtering technology, which extends the low frequency response by one-half octave. DC technology prevents the top-mounted 12-inch woofer from responding to signals that are below the natural resonance frequency of the system. When conventional speakers without DC attempt to reproduce such signals, they absorb excessive amounts of power in attempting to create extreme excursions that produce little audible output. The result of this would be very high levels of bass harmonic distortion as well as lower efficiency and power handling capabilities. Consequently, DC technology lowers bass distortion and channels the energy where it can be used to improve the low-frequency extension of the system.

The Reference Center features a highly 'tuned' version of Canton's proven 1-inch dome tweeter, which features a dome and voice-coil former fashioned from a single piece of aluminum-manganese alloy. When compared with conventional two-piece glued domes and formers, the Canton tweeter provides a much more direct coupling between the voice coil and the diaphragm. It also allows the dome to act as a radiator to cool the coils at high power levels. In the Reference 2 Center, this classic Canton tweeter was modified with a high energy neodymium ring magnet, added magnetic shielding to better contain the higher magnetic flux levels, and improved internal venting to prevent compression effects which can impinge on dynamic response.

The Reference 2 Center's 7-inch aluminum mid/bass and midrange drivers each feature an unusual concave dustcap that helps to maintain greater linearity and better dispersion characteristics across a broad frequency range. The dustcaps are formed from the same material as the cones themselves, providing for multiple resonance paths to prevent the formation of clearly defined standing waves across the face of the driver. Other enhancements in the Reference series drivers include a redesigned double-ferrite shielded magnet system, and a sinusoidally-shaped injected rubber surround for improved linearity, frequency response, and power handling characteristics.

The Karat Reference 2 Center’s powerful 12-inch woofer has tremendous power handling characteristics thanks to its enhanced double-ferrite shielded magnet system, a low-mass cellulite-graphite diaphragm, sinusoidal surround, improved suspension, and a heavy duty cast magnesium frame. These are all proprietary drivers designed and manufactured exclusively by Canton.

The Canton Karat Reference 2 DC Center is finished in a stunning silver lacquer with a black fabric cover. It will be available in January with a suggested retail price of $5,000 each.

Canton's New Vento Loudspeakers Combine German Engineering with Italianate Curves

Canton's New Vento Loudspeakers Combine German Engineering with Italianate Curves

Canton, Germany's leading manufacturer of high-performance loudspeakers, has introduced a line of high-end music and home theater speakers called Vento. Named after the Italian word for 'wind,' this four-model line features gracefully curving cabinetry reminiscent of a fine violin. Unlike a violin, however, there is nothing delicate about the rugged, pressure-laminated monocoque construction, which provides superior stiffness and sonic neutrality compared to flat sided speakers. This new cabinet design, coupled with significant improvements to the transducers and crossover network, results in a line of speakers with higher output levels, extended treble response, more bass, and significantly lower distortion levels than competing products.

Using a technique is similar to that used to manufacture high-end pianos, the Vento line's curved panels are made from a thick, six-layer laminate of wood and wood fiber composites molded one layer at a time under very high pressure. This creates an incredibly stiff and sonically neutral enclosure. The outer layer is finished with either cherry wood or silver lacquer.

"The Vento line represents a new evolutionary branch on the Canton family tree," said the company's chief designer, Frank Göbl, "Like all our speakers, appearance follows function, with the inherently greater stiffness of the curved, monocoque structure acting to reduce panel resonances and eliminate internal parallel surfaces. It also provides for a relatively high internal volume while maintaining a narrow front baffle, and a very elegant and unobtrusive appearance."

(pictured with optional LS 800 stand)

The Vento line consists of four models: Vento 809 DC, a large full-range three-way floor-standing speaker system; Vento 807 DC, a smaller full-range three-way floor-standing speaker systems; Vento 802, a compact two-way pedestal speaker; and Vento 805 CM, a 2-1/2-way center channel speaker. All four models are bass-reflex designs with front ports on the floor-standing models, and rear ports on the others. The two floor-standing speakers use Canton's proprietary Distortion Control circuitry for exceptionally clean bass response. These two also use an isolation base system that was developed for Karat Reference to prevent vibrations from traveling into the floor.

In spite of its new appearance, Vento is unmistakable as the product of Canton's three-decade history of continuous improvement in all areas of research, development, engineering, design, and manufacturing. In Vento, Canton has made several significant improvements in its drivers and crossover design that help this speaker to set new standards for sound quality and performance.

All loudspeakers consist of a combination of parts that must function as a complete system, and no single part functions in isolation. Since Canton designs and builds all of its own drivers, cabinets, and crossovers, the company has much greater control over every part of they system than most other brands. The company's extensive computer-aided research, development, and manufacturing systems are used to optimize each component part with the goal of optimal total system performance.

One of the key elements in these speakers' natural sound reproduction is their use of the newest variant of company's ADT-25 one-inch aluminum-manganese dome tweeter. This powerful driver varies from earlier versions with a new flared front plane which acts to improve high frequency dispersion, off-axis linearity and to boost efficiency by 2- to 3-dB. The driver also uses a new surround design that allows the system to operate at higher frequencies without break-up or distortion. Like earlier tweeters, the Vento's uses Canton's signature one-piece aluminum-manganese tweeter dome and voice-coil former. By combining the dome and former in one piece instead of two, this tweeter provides superior high frequency performance and allows the dome to function as a heat sink for the voice coils.

The 7-inch driver, which is used as the midrange on the Vento 809 DC and as both a midrange and bass driver on the others, has an aluminum cone with a concave dust cap, and a powerful magnetic system. The wave system (cone, dust cap, and surround) is modeled on that used in the Karat Reference line but with a new cone shape, improved spider, and a totally new sinusoidal surround. These changes, plus refinements in the magnetic system result in a 30- to 40-percent improvement in excursion range and increases output by 3 dB.

The two 8-inch woofers used on the Vento 809 DC are Canton's largest aluminum cone drivers. They have new sinusoidal surrounds, improved speaker coils, and new double-ferrite motor for improved excursion linearity, higher output levels and low distortion. The bass performance of the Vento 809 DC and Vento 807 DC are further enhanced by the use of Canton's signature Displacement Control technology, which eliminates unwanted excursions below the normal operating frequency of the speaker, and especially infrasonic oscillations. DC technology also provides a strong boost in low-end response, and dramatically reduces harmonic distortion.

The Vento 802 is a two-way bass-reflex design with a rear port. It is ideal for pedestal mounting in a compact stereo system, or as a surround speaker in a home theater. The Vento 805 CM center channel speaker is a 2-1/2-way bass-reflex design with a rear port, and it has been optimized for horizontal mounting. The driver magnets have computer-optimized magnetic shielding. A curved base allows the speaker to be tilted up or down to suit acoustics.

These new loudspeakers will be available from Canton dealers in January with suggested retail prices of $5,000 per pair for the Vento 809 DC; $3,500 per pair for the Vento 807 DC; $2,000 per pair for the Vento 802; and $1,500 each for the Vento 805 CM. They are each available in cherry wood veneer or silver lacquer finishes.

Canton is the largest manufacturer and best-selling brand of loudspeakers in Germany. It was founded in 1973 by a group of audio enthusiasts who defined their mission "to always develop the finest loudspeakers in their class." Wireworld Debuts the Ultimate HDMI/DVI Cable

Wireworld Silver Starlight 52 (five squared)Wireworld has introduced the world’s highest fidelity HDMI/DVI digital audio-video cable. Wireworld Silver Starlight 52, or "five squared," maintains a greater degree of signal integrity and covers longer distances – over 100 feet – than any other HDMI and DVI cable.

"Silver Starlight 52 is radically different from all previous HDMI and DVI cables” said David Salz, Wireworld's president and designer. "We were determined to take digital cable performance to a distinctly higher level, and while it was a tough climb, we succeeded."

One example of the lengths Salz went to is evident in the design of the cable’s internal shields. The conductor shields in conventional HDMI and DVI cables consist of metallized Mylar tape and a drain wire, which perform well for their reasonable cost and small size. However, their performance of is far from that of the ideal shield, a solid copper tube. With this ideal in mind, Salz developed a compact, dense and flexible shield made of silver-clad copper, which provides nearly ideal shielding and conductivity, without introducing additional bulk or excessive cost.

These unique shields are an element of Wireworld’s newly developed Wavesquare 2™ Digital Jitter Reduction Technology, which utilizes superior materials in a proprietary cable configuration to increase bandwidth, while minimizing signal loss, impedance variations, conductor length differentials, cross-talk and noise. The cable's unique flat profile, which is only .16" thick and .71" wide, provides superior flexibility and widens the range of installation options. The signal conductors consist of silver-clad copper of 6N (>99.9999%) purity, which is produced through the OCC (Ohno Continuous Casting) process utilizing Wireworld's proprietary Grain Optimization technique.

The anodized aluminum connector provides high durability and superior shielding. It also houses the proprietary Wavesquare 2™ cable terminations, which maintain the cable's precise 100-ohm impedance all the way to the plug contacts. These contacts are unique in that they are clad with a thick layer of silver, rather than the standard nickel, under their gold plating. This reduces the contact loss by more than half. Wavesquare 2™ Digital Jitter Reduction Technology provides Silver Starlight 52 with wider bandwidth, lower loss, lower noise, lower timing differential, less cross-talk, and greater impedance accuracy than any previous HDMI or DVI cable.

Wireworld Silver Starlight 52 cables are UL-CL3 and CSA-FT4 rated for in-wall installation. They will be shipping early February and pricing will be announced at CES.

Wireworld, which was founded by Salz in 1992, offers a broad spectrum of very high quality full-range and bi-wire loudspeaker cables, audio and video interconnects, digital audio interconnects, power cords, and digital A/V cables. The company has an excellent reputation among audio and home theater enthusiasts for producing high quality cables based on the use of objective perceptual testing, patented designs, premium materials, and exceptional manufacturing quality.

Wireworld Debuts the World's Fastest Speaker Cables

Wireworld Insta-Wire™Wireworld has introduced Insta-Wire™, the world's fastest system for creating custom, audiophile-quality speaker cables at home or on the job-site. Just insert Wireworld's proprietary Horizon 52 flat speaker wire into the Insta-Wire connector and squeeze to create premium speaker cables without the need for wire-strippers or crimping tools. These premium banana-plug and spade-lug connectors are made from oxygen-free copper, clad in a thick layer of highly conductive silver, and then gold plated to prevent oxidation. The finished cables carry Underwriter's UL-CL3 rating and Canada's CSA-FT4 rating for in-wall use.

"We've taken a surprisingly time-consuming task, and turned it into instant gratification," said David Salz, Wireworld's president and chief designer. "For custom installers, this will allow them to provide their customers with a very-high-quality cable in a fraction of the time it takes to terminate twisted-pair speaker wire or even zip cord. It's so easy you can do it blindfolded. We've been working on this for a long time, but it was only when we figured out how to achieve this convenience without compromising our tradition of providing objectively superior sound quality, that we began producing the cable. The cable can also be stripped and terminated easily with conventional tools and connectors."

The flat, Horizon 52 two-conductor oxygen-free-copper insulated cable is just over 1/8th inch thick and less than 3/8ths of an inch wide, and its shape is asymmetric to prevent polarity errors. The cross-sectional area of the conductor is equivalent to a conventional 14-gauge round conductor. The conductors are insulated in polyethylene to reduce capacitance and dielectric absorption for cleaner high frequencies, while maintaining fidelity. The proprietary conductor design provides uniform series impedance for superior fidelity, even over long runs. Developed through objective perceptual testing, this design minimizes inductive losses to produce dramatic improvements in clarity, dynamics and spatial effects.

The highly intuitive Insta-Wire connectors use a proprietary design that makes it easy to create very-high-quality banana-plug or spade-lug terminations. Once the wire is inserted into the opening, the sides of the connector are squeezed, driving eight silver-clad and gold-plated oxygen-free copper blades through the insulation to create two high-pressure crimp connections on each of the two conductors.

Since the Horizon 52 asymmetrical shape of the cross-section of the cable and shape of the opening are identical, it is impossible to connect the wires backwards. It also allows connectors to be easily assembled totally by feel in awkward locations and with complete confidence of doing the job right.

The Wireworld Insta-Wire connectors are available in with either banana plugs or spade-lug connections. Insta-Wire and Horizon 52 will be shipping early February and pricing will be announced at CES.
